FONDAZIONE IRIS CERAMICA GROUP WITH SEA SHEPHERD AMONG THE SEA BOTTOMS OF LIGURIA AND SICILY

Fondazione Iris Ceramica Group continues to work alongside Sea Shepherd Italia. Since 2020, the profound ties have been based on the recognition of the common goals of environmental protection and sustainable development that characterise both organisations.
This year has seen two main campaigns:

  • The first in Liguria, where three diving teams worked in Punta Manara to recover two ghost nets abandoned in the Gulf of Tigullio. A vital location for marine biodiversity, where there are still thick colonies of false black coral, Savalia savaglia, one of the oldest and rarest of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as one of the most long-lived on the planet. The campaign led to the recovery of 240 kg of marine waste in three days.
  • The second in Sicilia: in late June, the Sea Shepherd team worked among the sea bed in Augusta and Catania to remove nets and sediments covering three WWII plane wrecks. A hugely valuable operation, also thanks to targeted underwater excavations, aiming to completely restore the view of the plane fuselage buried in the sand and offer useful clues for the historical reconstruction of the events linked to their sinking.

Sea Shepherd also works on the production of Abyss Clean-Up: the documentary film on the sea bed pollution between Sicily and Liguria. The aim is to raise awareness of the safeguard measures adopted in the marine environment, seeking possible solutions with researchers and the scientific world.
Our Foundation continues to support the worthy operations of Sea Shepherd, building a better future together marked by sustainability and respect for our planet.
