On 18 March at the “Buca di Susano” in Palagano, the commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the massacre of Monchio, Costrignano, Susano and Savoniero was held, the tragic epilogue of a series of battles between the partisans and the German troops in this part of the Modena Apennines in early 1944, culminating in a Nazi retaliation which cost the lives of 136 civilians.

For the occasion, Fondazione Iris Ceramica Group supported the “Balugina il giorno” project devoted to the victims, with an installation of eight ceramic slabs which, using our Design Your Slabs technology, tell of the massacre along with the cartoon “C’era la neve lassù” (“There was snow up there”), the scenes of which are told in the memorial also through images and videos showing direct testimonials.

“These two projects aim to keep the memory of this local tragedy alive, renewing the memory of the massacre with new instruments, able to transmit emotions also to the new generations, aware that memory is not an exercise but a moral duty,” said Fabio Braglia, the Mayor of Palagano.

The Foundation’s support to the project demonstrates our solidarity with the local community, aiming to commemorate the tragedy in memory of the victims, sending an important message to the new generations: learn from history to prevent the errors of the past from being repeated.
